My brief visit to Berlin this year yielded vivid images of the tattooed skin and the painted vistas of the city. I was struck by the physical and cosmetic similarities between Berlin and New York, and these photographs are my attempt to view this medieval-yet-modern city through the lens of a New Yorker. The urgent graffiti and the monumental buildings, which seemed to be heaped into this reinvented city, amazed me. Moreover, I fell instantly in love with this turbulent, frenetic, and haunting place.
I often find myself trying to explain a situation by starting with the imperative, “Look.” My work reflects that same exhortation to see what is apparent and yet missed or overlooked. I often photograph the same subject over and over again, peeling away layers and paring down the compositions to enable the viewer to see what I see. In a way, my work is a photographic show and tell, like a child proudly trotting a piece of junk from the street in to his parents. Just look.
