I’m interested in making a viewer look twice; in creating a space where statement transubstantiates and meanings form, dissolve and re-form with each look. Often working in series, I like to choose a subject, usually appropriating imagery and then, through a painstakingly slow process of painting, re-painting, and stitching glass beads onto canvas, I turn popular imagery, more traditionally viewed often and quickly, into a labor of love.
I collect images, memories, quotes, histories, thoughts and bits of imagination. Assembling elements that our culture has deemed popular, important or beautiful, I seek to juxtapose, distinguish, highlight and dislodge. All at once I want to inhabit my subjects, claiming them on my own terms, and at the same time to uproot them from their common context, confusing time, normal place and established memory. In their displacement, meanings shift and references start to play off one another. So, while content and organization are my own, meaning depends largely on the viewer. It is this necessary process of slowing down looking, and the potential for different interpretations that I find most interesting, challenging and beautiful.
