In her dress collages, JoAnne McFarland uses antique botanical prints, turn-of-the-century newspaper and magazine ads, sheet music, and sepia colored rice papers that suggest bark, wood, earth and skin, particularly African-American skin. McFarland’s collages reaches into the recesses of a people's collective memory to bring forth objects whose associations are as complex as they are nostalgic.
