My work is concerned with creating a unique language through which one may find new ways of communicating. This language uses an ever-increasing vocabulary that offers a unique lens through which to view the world we live in. My drawings expand the accepted modes of exchange, allowing new methods to disseminate, translate, and transfer information.
A primary method of transferring said information is that of the part to whole relationship. I work in small, detailed portions, filling a particular space with marks and movement that grow over time. As these spaces expand and intrude on one another, new relations are made, new directions are decided upon, and ultimately the drawing greatly increases in complexity.
Often this is done simply with a repeated mark that saturates an area as it transforms slightly. Alone these marks are simple and bare, but as they grow en masse new and entirely different shapes and spaces are formed. The idea of something simple and straightforward becoming a part of something larger, more significant, and ultimately a much more powerful image visually is extremely attractive to me. Opposing interests are combined and intertwined, in most circumstances the whole itself is the ultimate goal, yet it is not possible without the presence and participation of all parts involved.
For this reason, my drawings come from a place of austerity and simplicity, and grow into images of highly complex composition. Many times the cycle goes backwards as well, and I often explore the breakdown of these forms along with their creation.
